Wainriders

a Fallen Realms Army by Jay Powell

Who were the Wainriders?

The Wainriders were a confederation of Easterling tribes who were united by their hate of Gondor, fuelled by Sauron. Following the Great Plague which weakened Gondor, they started their raids in 1851 of the Third Age and attacked in full force five years later, defeating the Gondorian army and killing King Narmacil ll. They rode in great wagons and chariots (which gave them their name), and raided the lands of Rhovanion, destroying or enslaving its people. Gondor gradually lost all of its possessions east of Anduin, save Ithilien, to them. The thirtieth king of Gondor, Calimehtar son of Narmacil, defeated the Wainriders in battle on the Dagorlad, buying some rest for his land.

Overview

I have chosen to play Fallen Realms as my army of choice for War of the Rings.  I don't know why but I never liked how Tolkien depicted the split of Goblins, Orcs, and Urakai and to be honest the models GW has produced for them have never really inspired me.  However the evil armies of Men, especially the Easterling are another matter entirely.  Upon reading through the WotR main rulebook I really liked the rules and more importantly the imagry of the Fallen Realms army.  None of the factions had been covered very extensively in the movies that inspired the game and I felt that this allowed me to take some creative leeway with the army and gave me the oppertunity to give the army a feel and a color scheme of my own choosing.

I chose to embrace the hints of Dragon worship within the rules for the Easterling Cohorts and go with a Dragon worshiper theme at least for the paint scheme.  To that end my army will be painted mostly in Greens with the color of the scale armor differing in color depending on what the model is.  The basics guys, Archers, Hand Weapon/Shield, Pike, Cavalry, whatever will all have gold scales.  All the the unit Hero upgrades will have Red scales to denote that they are leaders (and have might points).  Wizards, if I decide to include any of the unit variety upgrade will have Yellow as their detail color.  Dragon Knights, a special type of Hero upgrade for Easterling units will have their scale armor painted like flames.

This looks remarkably like what my 500 point list looks like.
