Winter 2009 Fantasy Escalation League

Week 0: Before the League Begins

Painting

I haven't done much work on my Skaven in the past couple of years, honestly.  So, the stuff I painted beforehand, I won't note here... just the stuff I started painting when I finally said, "Hey, I probably need to start painting for the League!"

I've painted a full unit of Plague Monks.

I converted and painted... Ratputin himself.  Depending how I feel, I'll field him as either a Plague Deacon or a Plague Priest.  He was supposed to be this crazy rat monk dude, but just ended up as a kinda cool plague monk.

I've also started painting enough Jezzails to last, hopefully, well into the league.

I've started some work on some Plague Censer Bearers and an Assassin.  I suppose this means I probably should turn an eye towards what 1,200 points will look like.

Army List

I figure there's going to be a lot of waffling between now and then, as a direct result of my not knowing what the hell I'm doing.  Of course, at 1,000 points, there's not a lot of wiggle room.  Of course, as I get in some "practice" games I'm starting to waffle on what those first 1,000 points want to look like.

  List A

Chieftan - Heavy Armour, Shield

Warlock Engineer - Accumulator, Condenser, Warp-Blades, Dispel Scroll x2

List A is what I'd initially been planning to take.  However, I've since played with a couple of different lists and have found that two Warlock Engineers is very nice... hence List B.  You and I both know, though, that three characters is too many at 1,000 points.  Right now, I like List C, which is a lot like List A, but dropping a unit Slaves opens up room for some Night Runners, which have been useful, and the Umbranner, which should be much more useful to my Plague Monks.

1/14 - Maybe I  should have called this page "Week -3 through Week 0,"  seeing as how this page is describing pretty much all my build up to the Escalation League over the past few weeks.

This past week, I ran List C twice.  It didn't go well.  I  don't think the list is wildly off, but I will need to make some changes.   The Accumulator simply doesn't make any sense on the lone Warlock.  It's pretty much just a loose, useless magic die.  The unit of slaves, I'm thinking about dropping.  Academically, I know they're supposed to be in there and that I'm supposed to use them.  In practice, though, Clanrat Slaves have done nothing for me.  If I  drop the Accumulator and the Slaves, I've got nearly 60 more points to spend on maybe some Giant Rats.  I'd take more Night Runners, which I've had a great deal more luck with, but that Mainstay Unit business says, "No."

So, the new list will be something like:

List D

Chieftan - Heavy Armour, Shield, Halberd

Warlock Engineer - Condenser, Warp-Blades, Dispel Scroll x2

Clanrats x24 - Full Command, Ratling Gun

Clanrats x24 - Full Command, Ratling Gun

Giant Rats x6

Giant Rats x6

Night Runners x5

Night Runners x5

Plague Monks x24 - Full Command, Umbranner

Warplock Jezzails x5
